The Big & Juicy Quilt for Janome

Posted by on Sep 30, 2014 in Blog, Quilts, Tutorials

I was recently asked to participate in a September-long sewing event, An Apple A Day with Janome. We were asked to create some small sewing project to post at some point during the month. So what did I do? I made an 1800-piece pixelated Big & Juicy apple quilt.

As it is the 30th today, The Big & Juicy Quilt has been posted as the grand finale of the event. I walk you through my simple design process and I have even included a downloadable chart so you can make a Big & Juicy of your own, should you desire. Come read all about it on Janome Life.

And if anyone has suggestions on how to finish the quilting (of the apple & leaf – the ground is complete), I’d love to hear them below.

Oh my goodness, Ms. Kate, that Big & Juicy Apple quilt is the most adorable little work of art! 1,800 pieces?! Yikes but that sounds like a lot of work. GREAT job!! Your eye for colour and design are flawless, I must say. I adore your fabric lines, have a whack of the terrific ‘Flight Patterns’ fabric in my stash to make my dream quilt someday, and just wish I had little ones to sew for because the clothing ideas in your newsletter are all so wonderful I want to buy all if your fabrics as soon as I see them. I haven’t got to the stage in my craft where I’ve actually quilted anything yet myself, but I do have grand ideas for it all. I’d suggest a simple swirly stitch pattern for the apple and a curvy “leaves-on-vines” for the leaves, to offset the squares of the pixilation. I’m sure whatever you choose will look amazing.

Thank you, Diane, for your sweet comments & your quilting suggestions. I especially like the idea of the leaves on vines quilting for the leaf.

Love that wonderful Apple. Also that great piece of fabric that looks like a worm. Well done!

Haha! My daughter said I should take it out because it’s too dark (8-yr olds have strong opinions), but I thought exactly the same thing as you – a worm. It’s actually a giraffe head from Stand Tall from my Origami Oasis collection. So happy you like the quilt!

What a great quilt! I especially like the red stack in the upper right corner and the binding choice. They really add so much to your quilt!
