All the Petals Quilt

I fell in love with fellow Michael Miller Fabrics designer, Patty Slinger’s Flower Shop collection at Quilt Market last fall. So much so, I knew I needed to get my hands on a pile of it to make some pretty summery-looking quilt. Patty’s colour pallet & choice of imagery are right up my alley and have inspired this All the Petals Quilt. It’s about 40″ x 60″, so a nice size for a lap quilt.

When I was deciding what sort of quilt I wanted to make, I was feeling the need to get back to some peaceful hand stitching, so opted to make it almost purely with needle-turned appliqué. I couldn’t choose which fabrics to highlight, so opted to use just about every fabric from the collection.

I made 7 different petal shaped templates that I used to cut all the bolder fabrics and laid them along the top edge of each a series of strips of the lower volume fabrics in the collection. I appliquéd around the curved edges of the petals only. The top flat edges were caught in the seams when I sewed all the strips together by machine.

Simple straight line quilting on only the ground fabrics keeps things linear & clean. I may add some hand quilting on the petals still, but for now, am enjoying the simplicity of it the way it is. My choice for backing is my favourite of the collection, Botanika in that lovely bluish-grey. I adore the pattern flow!

Flower Shop, which started shipping to stores last month, has been my antidote to all the snow over the past few weeks. It couldn’t have come at a better time!

This is a lovely design, Tamara, and would be a great idea for using up scraps of your origami fabric line with the giraffes and lions — I have a ton of it in my stash.
